HATCHING EGGS F.A.Q's
How much is shipping?
Shipping on hatching eggs is as follows:
6-12 eggs $20
12-24 eggs $30
24-36 eggs $40
Shipping on chick boxes will be charged a flat $65 and there is a 6 chick minimum for shipping.
Shipping on birds needing a large box will be charged a flat $130 and can usually hold 4-6 Juveniles or 1-2 adult birds depending on the box size.
For live birds these fees cover the box, bedding pad, heat packs if needed, and we ship with cucumber or squash so they have something to snack on enroute!
How soon after I order hatching eggs will they arrive?
Hatching egg orders are filled in the order they are received. If there are no other pending orders they could go out same day/week, but if there are several pending orders it could take several weeks to fill your order.
SPRING PRE-ORDERS will start shipping by March 1st.
How old are the eggs being shipped?
The eggs we ship for hatching are collected within 48hours max, that means eggs are no more than 2 days old at the time we ship them. Hatching eggs have a 14 day shelf life but viability really goes significantly downhill after day 8-9. We ship Priority Mail so eggs will be less than 7 days old by the time they get to you. We recommend letting them rest for 12 hours pointy end down before putting them in your incubator OR setting them right away without turning them for 1-2 days. We set eggs every other week so our oldest eggs going into the incubator are 14 days old and we still see excellent fertility and development with our 2 week old eggs! We keep larger flocks so its not uncommon that the eggs shipped were also collected the same day.
What is our hatching egg guarantee?
Because of variables out of our control we cannot guarantee hatch rates. We do confirm fertility here at our farm before eggs are sold to the public. We confirm the eggs are fertile via incubation of our own batches of eggs. Once an egg is incubated for more than a day or two the blastoderm (bullseye) is degraded and you can NO LONGER tell if an egg was fertile. Unless you crack them open BEFORE you incubate them (which is asinine to do) you will NEVER know if they were fertile. There are dozens if reasons shipped eggs won't develop. Most are due to incubation techniques or what happened during shipping (I'm not referring to packing). To add to that, you can't candle as egg prior to incubating to see if its fertile.
We guarantee your eggs arrive to you unbroken. We package eggs extremely well although sometimes USPS isn't as friendly to our boxes as we would like.
We DO NOT send replacements if you can't get the eggs to hatch or have no development. There are way to many variables after the eggs leave out farm that are totally out of our control, including your incubation methods, USPS handling, etc..
HATCHING EGGS ARE ALWAYS A GAMBLE when shipping with the Postal Service. So many factors can cause a perfectly fertile egg to not develop, this doesn't mean it was never fertilized to begin with we know our eggs are fertile as we set and hatch our own eggs from the same batches that our shipped eggs are collected from.
What do I do if eggs arrive broken?
We rarely have eggs arrive damaged, but we will take care of you if it happens!
*Send us email to: [email protected] w/ order number in the subject line (EX: 10002/Broken Eggs)
*Include pictures of: The outside of the box, inside of the box with the eggs in it, pictures of the broken eggs showing all broken eggs in one picture, and any other pictures that clearly show the damaged box/contents. We ONLY replace broken eggs, please make sure pictures clearly show the damaged eggs and all damaged eggs are located in one picture together.
*We send replacement eggs for the ones that arrived broken only, but the buyer is responsible for the $20 shipping fee.
What is your recommended incubation methods?
Everyone has different techniques, but here at the farm we incubate and hatch in a Brinsea cabinet at 99.5-100.2 degrees and 40% humidity and only bump lockdown up to 50% humidity (for bantam breeds we dont recommend bumping humidity at all). A good reliable incubator will also help keep temp and humidity more stable or a faithful broody hen!
